matatu messages

I forgot to include this in my last post! Living in Kampala, and especially since I moved out to Nfufu to stay with Grace, I spent a lot of time (an average of probably an hour and a half every day) in matatus, the city’s ubiquitous minibus taxis. Many matatus have slogans painted on the front or back windshield that make for entertaining reading during my commute. From worshipful to wise, irreverent to incomprehensible, here are some matatu message gems:

ALLAH AKBAR

TRY JESUS

GLORY B 2 GOD

ARSENAL

MAN UNITED

PUFF DADDY

BIG MOTHER

EMPOWERED

BEYONCE No.1 (presumably there’s a whole fleet of Beyonces out there on the streets of KLA)

DADDY BARACK

ONE MAN’S MEAT (is another man’s…?)

NO GAIN WITHOUT PAIN

GOD IS NOT LATE NOT EARLY JUST IN TIME

BOYZ WILL BE BOYZ

DO NOT HUNT WHAT YOU CANNOT KILL

PATIENCE PAYS (too appropriate for the maddeningly slow traffic jams that choke the streets)

NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT

SCHOOL FEES

GHETO LIFE

BRAIN BROTHERS IN GOD WE TRUST

RESPECT FULLS TO AVOID NOISE OLD ENGLISH SHEEP CLUB (?!?!?!?!)

I can think of a few too many pub nights in England where I’ve said similar things…

  2. RASH TIME
